Obituary of Alan James Taylor

Taylor, Alan James Alan passed away peacefully in his sleep, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Guelph, on Friday, January 10, 2020 at the age of 89 years. Pre-deceased by his parents, and brother Ross, he leaves to mourn his beloved wife Elizabeth (Bette) Mayer (nee Sutton), his daughters Lynne (North Bay), Lee Ann (Iroquois Falls), his step-daughter Sue (Guelph), step-son Mark (Vancouver), sister-in-law Shirl (Owen Sound), 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and dear friends. Alan grew up in Campbellford, Ontario, where he met Bette and befriended the Sutton family. He worked in his father’s butcher shop for many years, and after completing Normal School, left to begin a teaching career in Iroquois Falls, where he raised his two daughters. He soon became principal at Iroquois Falls Public School, and his career there spanned almost 40 years. Though their paths initially took different directions, Alan and Bette reconnected in southern Ontario in the 1990’s, and were married in 2002. Over the years he enjoyed winters in Florida with Bette, golfing and entertaining many friends and relatives there. They spent summers in Belleville until he and Bette moved to Guelph a few years later. There he enjoyed spending time with his Guelph family, and golfing at Maryhill with his love, right up to the age of 87! Many thanks to the caring doctors and staff at St. Joseph’s Complex Continuing Care (Apple Blossom), Guelph General Hospital, and Dr.’s Stemerdink and Friedman. Cremation has taken place. A private family ceremony to spread Alan’s ashes will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions to Diabetes Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre, Guelph, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
