Obituary of Tom Cuthbert

CUTHBERT, Tom “Gus”

It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce that Tom "Gus" Cuthbert has passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with Parkinsons disease, on Feb 17th at the age of 81.

Beloved husband of 57 years to Merle. Loving father to Patricia "Patty" and Jason (Gina). Cherished grandfather to Bali. Survived by his sister (Sister Margret Ann Cuthbert).

Tom was a devoted husband and father, a loyal family man who enjoyed nothing greater than time spent with his family.

He served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1961 to 1969.

He worked at Owens Corning in Guelph for 36 years until he retired.

Tom loved gardening with his wife, cycling and scuba diving in earlier years, watching Formula 1 Racing and Football.

Tom, along with his son and granddaughter attended many Pittsburgh Steelers’ football games and training camps, something he was passionate about. Tom was very committed to fitness and was well known on the gym/workout scene. He was an avid reader and history buff and a connoisseur of international beers and loved browsing at the beer store.

Tom treasured his neighbors and the Applewood Crescent community in Guelph, where he lived for 55 years. He loved walking and bumping into friends along the way. You could always count on a friendly wave and a warm, enthusiastic smile if Tom saw you. He will always be remembered for his "easy going way", his great sense of humor and his devotion to friends.

He had close ties with his wife's family in Antigonish, NS, where he loved to visit his in-laws and where many great memories were made.

Tom traveled extensively and he left many footprints in the sand on many beaches all over the world and he touched the hearts of everyone he met along the way.

The family would like to thank the staff at both the Guelph General Hospital and Hospice Wellington for their exceptional care and compassion. We are sincerely grateful to all of you.

There will be no service at this time, but a Celebration of Life will be planned for the summer.

As expressions of sympathy, contributions in memory of Tom to Guelph Wellington Hospice or to the Guelph Humane Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
