Obituary of Margaret Murdoch
Murdoch, Margaret Olive (nee Pinches) ~ Passed away peacefully at the Guelph GeneralHospital on Sunday February 7th, 2016 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late Charles Rupert Murdoch (2013). Loved mother of Cam and Jean. Predeceased by her brothers: Jack, Len, Gordon, Bob and sisters: Gladys and Mary. She was the last surviving member of her generation of "Pinches". Now that the Head Pinch is gone it is up to this Generation to carry on the legacy, which will no doubt be carried on by the Murdoch clan as well! She will not only be missed by Cam and Jean, but by many nieces and nephews, and friends the world over.
As a result of having grown up in the 20's and 30's in Regina, Saskatchewan, before and during the Depression and the Second World War she proved there was nothing that she couldn't overcome.
Marg attended elementary and high school in Regina. Upon entering high school, she met her lifelong friend, Grace, (a member of the Lucky 7 Club) 76 years ago. During this time, one class in particular where she met Grace, after they initially chose their seats at the back of the class, the teacher promptly moved them to the front row, as he could sense they would be trouble. Even though Grace moved to Vancouver, Washington, they still kept in touch faithfully. After the Second World War, Marg moved to Toronto where she was introduced by another high school friend (also a member of the Lucky 7 Club) to her future husband, Rupert. They were soon married and moved to Guelph where they raised their family and spent the next 64 years happily. Over the years, they met many good friends with whom they stayed in touch. Jill has been one of those good friends, who was also a neighbour during the time when their children were young. Many memorable family gatherings have been held of more recent times. Marg often spoke of these family gatherings, and no doubt these cherished memories will bring more pleasant thoughts to all those who attended. Marg worked as an administrative assistant in a local chartered accountancy firm, now known as RLB, for almost 30 years. There were many students who came through this firm who she eloquently explained the "right" way to do things. She had a way of explaining things where one did not know that they had been given trouble, but the other students were able to quickly inform them that they had indeed been scolded. She was a well respected employee of RLB, and was sorely missed when she retired almost 30 years ago. She began her association with Robinson, Lott and Brohman in its infancy in a house on Cork Street. After several locations and years later, they built a new building on Lewis Road. Marg's initial walk through of the new office brought forward a concern of where to plug in the typewriters. Their response - "Oh..." The wiring and plugs were quickly added to accommodate all of the equipment. Bill Brohman initially learned one of her many talents was shorthand which he used on a regular basis. Several years later, computers became mainstream, but Bill indicated that he would learn to use them, when it became necessary i.e. when Marg retired. During her retirement she was known as the "Bear Lady's Mom" at both the Guelph Farmer's Market and Fair November at the University of Guelph, for almost a decade. Marg sewed all of the bears under Jean's (the Bear Lady's) direction and lovingly embroidered all of the faces on them. These bears will be forever cherished the world over, by anyone who has purchased or received one. Marg took the bears to a local sewing circle where she would embroider the faces. The ladies met to enjoy a variety of crafts including knitting, quilting, embroidery, etc. During these weekly meetings, the ladies would discuss hot topics like the previous city council meetings. They would devise the best solutions for world problems, or least Guelph's! One of the member's grandchildren referred to the group as "The Stitch & Bitch Club". Marg will be fondly remembered by all those who met her, if even briefly, for her great sense of humour, kindness, and positive attitude. While her passing was unexpected and no doubt people will be saddened by the news, she is now on a new journey...oh the places she'll go, we'll never know, but the people she'll meet, will remember her smile and how she was so sweet...
