Obituary of Ernest Holmes Gilliatt

Gilliatt, Ernest Holmes Ernest Holmes Gilliatt passed away June 22, 2017 in his 88th year after a brief illness. Predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Gwen (1927-2003), and elder brother, Carroll, Ernie will be sadly missed by brothers Gerald, Robert and Bruce; sisters Marie and Dawn; sons Paul, Dayle (Ervina) and John; and grandchildren Gabrielle and Nicholas, as well as nephews and nieces, and their children. Raised on the family farm near Annapolis Royal, NS, Ernie graduated from Acadia University and the Nova Scotia Technical College (now Dalhousie University) in Civil Engineering. In a career spanning 45 years with the Canadian National Railway, the Bank of Montreal and Transport Canada, he developed and applied his knowledge and experience in transportation, systems and organization. His consulting assignments took him to Ghana, Zimbabwe, Thailand, India and Estonia. After retiring to Guelph in 1998, Ernie joined Rotary International and stayed active with lawn bowling, bridge, an exercise program and the occasional round of golf. Recently he added chess to his many interests. Ernie was also involved in several local churches and philanthropic endeavours. His enthusiasm for solving problems never diminished throughout his life. The family wishes to thank the people of St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener for their efforts, especially Dr. Ashe and his team as well as the staff of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Cutten Fields, 190 College Avenue East Guelph, ON at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 12, 2017.
