Smith, Donald Alexander ~ March 5, 1920 ~ November 22, 2013 ~ Peacefully, at the Guelph GeneralHospital on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Beloved husband of Ann. Dear father of Deborah Jane; special grandpa of Samantha Bower and brother of Anne Stewart and John Smith. Don lived all his life in Guelph. As a boy, Don went on rounds with the baker and took care of the horses which pulled the bread wagon. He fed them daily and brushed and fed them on the weekends as well. Don worked at the Poultry Department of the OAC and later at the OVC where he first cared for the mink ranch and later worked in microbiology and immunology departments until retirement. He loved hockey and played when he was young. He was a beautiful skater. As an adult, Don belonged to the Guelph Field Naturalists and The Guelph Historical Society. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and a life long member of Knox Church (beginning at St. Paul’s). Don was the oldest of eight children of the late Mina and Simon Smith. Predeceased by his parents; brothers: Gordon, Ken and Bill and sisters: May White and Barb Steele. A memorial service will be held at the GILCHRIST CHAPEL – McIntyre & Wilkie Funeral Home, One Delhi Street, Guelph on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions to Muscular Dystrophy would be appreciated.
