Obituary of Dora Sutherland
Sutherland, Dora Patience (King)
Passed away at Riverside Glen on Monday, November 25, 2013 after a long struggle with Alzheimers. Much loved by her husband Donald C. Sutherland. Loving mother of Paul King (Mary) of Beckenham, England and Stuart King (Jessica) of Singapore. Proud grandmother of Laura, Oliver, Timothy, Eleanor, Rufus and great grandmother of Isabel. Sadly missed by her step daughters Susan Sutherland and Bonnie Smith of Toronto and Laurie Sutherland of Montreal. Step grandmother of 3.
Dora was born in North Woolwich, England in 1925. She lived there until 1943 working in the British Admiralty as a Cypher Clerk. It was there she met Alexander King who was in the British Merchant Marine, and they were married in September 1943. By the wars end Alex had qualified with a Master Mariner Certificate and accepted a position of Captain of a Shell Oil tanker. As captain, Alex could have Dora with him on various voyages, particularly the Far East. In 1958 Alex came "ashore" and accepted a position as Harbour Master of Kuwait City. They lived in Kuwait until Alex died suddenly in April, 1973. Dora then moved back to England and took a position with a computer software company. In 1981 the company was sold to a British firm and the Principals returned to Toronto and Dora came with them to continue as Office Manager. Don & Dora met in 1985, were married in 1986 and lived in Georgetown and Terra Cotta until moving to Guelph in 2001. Dora was Past Matron of Peace Rose Chapter No. 315 OES Georgetown and also a member of Rundle Chapter No. 108 OES. The family are grateful to the staff of Riverside Glen for their wonderful compassion and care.
