Obituary of Dorothy Day
Day, Dorothy Ernestine (nee Colyer)
At her home in Cambridge on November 27, 2015, in her 88th year. Beloved wife of the late Aubrey Calvin Day (2002). Cherished mother of Catherine Julia (Doug), the late David Aubrey (1977), and Kenneth George (Dianne). A wonderful Nana to Michael David (Tara), D. Stephen Aubrey, Tyler Kenneth (Nicole) and Allison Jessica (Chris). Special sister and sister-in-law to Julie & Rob MacLachlan and the late Ken (1999) & Kim Colyer. Special cousin to Bev & Roland Lanouette and Bobby & Shirley Loy. Favourite aunt of Morgan (Erhan) and Spencer (Margariete). Treasured friend of many, most especially Norma (the late Cliff) McKeown, Dutchy (the late Bill) Brass and the late Bill Wands. Dorothy held a special place in the heart of Angela Stewart, and her granddaughters, Allie and Tonja (Chris), and had fun getting to know little Darren last year.
Dorothy cared for her family more than words can portray. She and Aubrey worked tirelessly to give their children more than they ever had themselves. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, bowling, baking and kitty-cats. Her kindness and thoughtfulness were legendary - as were her butter tarts. Dorothy loved her children above all else. In her "middle years", she was thrilled to welcome four special grandchildren into the fold, and shared many happy memories with them. Her heart warmed whenever any of them shared time with her. Dorothy was delighted to become a great grandmother and particularly enjoyed spending time with Makena Catherine & Kayden Joy.
Dorothy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2002 and struggled with many daily life activities, especially in the past few years. She became a resident of The Royal on Gordon Retirement Residence, Guelph in 2012 and enjoyed meeting new friends (esp. Helen-Marie) and sharing in social activities. In February 2015, Dorothy moved to Long Term Care at the Fairview Mennonite Home, Cambridge where she has been cared for by MANY wonderful staff members (esp. Rhonda, Brenda, Barb and Julie) and continued to enjoy a variety of social activities.
Dorothy will be missed by so many, none more than her loving daughter and son. All of those who loved her and cared for her will always remember her, and treasure special memories of this wonderful mother, nana, sister and friend. If desired, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of Canada. Cremation has taken place. A special celebration and remembrance of Dorothy’s life will be held later in 2016. Arrangements entrusted to the GILCHRIST CHAPEL – McIntyre & Wilkie Funeral Home, One Delhi Street, Guelph, (519-824-0031). We invite you to leave your memories and donations online
