Obituary of Richard H. Beatty

Richard Hamilton Beatty, (b. April 8, 1931, Madison, Wisconsin) passed away July 26, 2015 at Guelph General Hospital, Ontario after a brief illness. Son of the late Hamilton Beatty and Gwenydd Chewett Beatty, Richard was predeceased by his brother Robert McCutcheon Beatty of Salem, Massachusetts in 2012. He is survived by his youngest brother Arthur James Beatty of Uxbridge, Ontario, his daughter Elizabeth Bardach Lawrence and her family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, niece Alice Beatty and nephews Scott, Todd and Douglas Beatty. Richard was a proud graduate of DartmouthCollege in Hanover, New Hampshire where he was active in the Dartmouth Outing Club, Features Editor of The Dartmouth and a member of the college band and Sigma Phi Epsilon. He obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School at Ann Arbor. During his college years he explored the Homathko Snowfield in the interior of British Columbia with classmate George Cochrane and the pair named a previously unclimbed peak ‘Mt. Dartmouth’ in honour of their alma mater. Richard was a Life Member of the legendary Kandahar Ski Club based in Murren, Switzerland. Richard practised law in Rochester, New Hampshire and moved to Guelph in 1970. He was a long-time resident of the Elliott Community where he made many friends and maintained his intense intellectual curiosity despite serious health issues. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Western Ontario for medical research and no funeral will be held.
