Obituary of Meehan Alfred Bonnar

Meehan Alfred Bonnar ("Dig")

April 20, 1947 – May 28, 2026

It is with profound love and great sadness that the family of Meehan "Dig" Alfred Bonnar announce his passing on May 28, 2026, at the age of 79. He fought bravely and was determined to return home, where he passed surrounded by the people he loved dearly and who loved him in return.

Meehan was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Peggy Bonnar of Ottawa; his in-laws, Dr. W.F. and Mary Brown of Ottawa; and his brother, John Bonnar.

He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Bonnar of London, and will be forever remembered and cherished by their children, Chris Bonnar (Laurie) of Guelph and Dave Bonnar (Anne) of Cambridge.

Meehan was a devoted grandfather to Emily, Matthew, Tonya, Erica, and Nathan.

He is survived by his siblings Joyce Boucher (Barry) and Brian Bonnar (Janice), both of Ottawa, as well as his stepsister, Terry Phillips (Gordon), of England.

He was a beloved uncle to Tim and Kelly; Todd (Erin); Darlene; Heather (Ryan); Chris (Carmelita); Jeff (Trisha); Kim (Stephane); and Jason (Lori).

He will also be fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Nancy Murray (Walter Murray dec.) of London, and Helen Brown and her husband, Louis Neering, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, and Sharon Bonnar of Ottawa.

Meehan had a lifelong passion for sports, including hockey, golf, and baseball. He was drafted in the first round by the Boston Bruins in 1967 and was a scratch golfer who recorded multiple holes-in-one throughout his life. There was always a game on the radio or television in the Bonnar household, and he proudly passed his love of sports on to his sons and grandchildren.

Meehan was also very proud of his career with Royal City Realty. He continued working well into retirement because of his genuine love for the business and the people he served. He always went above and beyond for his clients, forming many lasting friendships along the way.

Mary will love and miss him into eternity.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Dialysis Clinics of Westmount, University Hospital, and Victoria Hospital. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and social workers whose care and dedication helped fulfill Meehan's wish to spend his final days at home with his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Meehan's memory may be made to the London Health Sciences Centre Renal Patient Assistance Program.
