Obituary of Dr. Joseph Paul Mokanski
Dr. Joseph Paul Mokanski
Surrounded by his loving family at home, it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Joseph Paul Mokanski on December 20, 2025, just days before his 89th birthday. Joe was the devoted husband of Lillian (Fior) Mokanski for more than 65 years and the cherished centre of a close and loving family.
Born an only child to the late Joseph Mokanski Sr. and Julia (Zagyi), Joe built a life rich in connection. He was the beloved father of Julianna (late Brian Jeffery), Janice (Peter Kukovica), and Matthew (Deb) Mokanski. He was “Papa” to five treasured grandchildren—Jacob (Rebecca) Kukovica, Nathan and Lisa Jeffery, and Megs and Kyra Mokanski—each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Joe was also a caring brother-in-law to Rose (late Al Begg), a supportive uncle to Debra (Ken Grant) and John (Betty) Begg, and a proud godfather to Dr. Michael Murphy Jr., Richard Czerlau, and Scott Steffler.
Joe earned his PhD in Mathematics in 1971, driven by a lifelong curiosity for abstract thought and problem solving. Over his distinguished 40+ year career at the University of Guelph, he served as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Known across campus as a teaching “legend,” Dr. Mokanski inspired generations of students with his creativity, patience, and unwavering belief in their potential. His excellence in teaching was recognized by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, the University of Guelph Faculty Association, and the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
Beyond academia, Joe was deeply committed to his community. He volunteered with the University of Guelph Retirees Association, the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, and served as a trustee with the Wellington Catholic District School Board.
Joe’s friendships, many spanning decades, were enriched by his love of country music, his talent for guitar, and many times celebrating with friends. A passionate model train and classic car enthusiast, he had a nostalgic appreciation for bygone eras. Joe delighted in the adventures of his children and grandchildren, always eager to hear their stories and always relieved when they were safely home.
Joe will be remembered for his kindness, his intellect, his humour, and the steadfast love he gave so freely to his family, friends and colleagues. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.

“I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.”
