So very sorry for your loss uncle Gerald and cousin Carole (Tom) and dog, Ethel. May Chantale rest in peace and be reunited with her mom and other family. So glad that we got to see Chantale last Christmas. I remember taking one of my cats to a vet in Ottawa who was wondering about something in his eye and he knew who Chantale was when it came up in convo.

I'm sad and so sorry to hear about Dr. Pinard's passing - I still talk about her and have great memories of her. I was a veterinary student at WCVM (Saskatoon) out in PEI for the cardiology rotation. One of my cases was a pug with mega eye issues plus heart issues, so I ended up working with Dr. Pinard on the case. I think our sense humours jived and there were many laughs (to the surprise of a couple students on her rotation - she was not afraid to voice her thoughts, whether it be praise or constructive criticism). Later in that school year, I was happy to see her in Saskatoon as an ophtho locum. Though I still sometimes use NSAIDs on corneal ulcers, I hear her voice sternly saying "that is malpractice" each and every time. Despite our interactions being adjacent and few, they were memorable, fun, and impactful, and gave me a glimpse of who she was as a person, not only a prof/ophthalmologist, and I can see how deeply she will be missed by her people (and Ethel).

Dear family of Chantal
My deepest condolences go out to you
Dear family of Chantal
With deep sadness I read about Chantal's passing. My warmest thoughts and condolences go out to you all.
I sang in the University Choir for many years. Chantal was always sitting behind me. The brief exchanges with her, before and after rehearsals, were so refreshing. Fond memories. She was a great person, a gifted professional who lived a full and valid life cut short by a dreadful disease. Her absence hurts. When you think of Chantal, may a ray of sunshine fall into your hearts and comfort you.
With love
Frieda Steiger

Heartbroken to lose Chantale so soon. I met Chantale in 1998 - I was part of the incoming intern class at OVC and she was part of the outgoing group. I was assigned to shadow her for the transition period. I was scared to death and she was anything but - assured, confident, and full of helpful advice. She made an instant and lasting impression on me and that was the first of many times that I'd wished for a smidge of her self-assurance and sensibility. I had the pleasure of being her colleague at OVC for over a decade. Our clinical spaces were across the hall from each other and there were many a night where we would stand in each other's doorways and chat. She was genuine in her words and actions, well respected, a fabulous teacher, and just a damn good person. I will hold on to our brunch together on her PEI tour in September and her simple words over the past couple of years: live life to the fullest, celebrate small joys, and don't sweat the small stuff. My deepest condolences to her family.

I had the privilege to learn from you both when you were new to AVC and Dr. Pinard was a locum. I was lucky enough to get a case involving both of your expertise & teachings, while appreciating your well established collegial relationship (w room for humour & fun). I remember you saying your offices were right next to each other, and you spoke highly of her. For many reasons, including both of you, that was a standout rotation. I'm sorry for your loss, too. Thanks for sharing her words with us.

My deepest condolences to the Pinard family. I had the honour of being Chantale’s classmate (OVC ‘93). Post-graduation, our paths crossed fleetingly but undeniably whenever in her presence, I could not help but admire her life’s journey. Chantale was so authentic. Her expressive and pragmatic nature left know room for misinterpretation. Her legacy is one of generosity, fulfillment, and the quiet light of a life lived well. À bientôt, Chantale.

I will miss you my friend. I loved our chats when you came to AVC to visit and teach Ophthalmology. Going out to dinner with you when you came each year was always a highlight. Our students gained so much wisdom from you. Your exponential impact will live on in them and the patients they serve.

There is a special cohort of students from the graduating class of 1969 at Gloucester High School in Ottawa who celebrated the birth of Chantale in 1968, the daughter of our most beloved and admired Geography teacher Gerald Pinard. We remember the great pride and happiness he radiated at that magic moment all those years ago. It was a delightful occasion for all of us to share with him at that time.
When we paid tribute to Gerald this year for the profoundly positive impact he had on so many of us, we took heart that it offered a welcome uplift to him and his family while they supported Chantale in her final days with them, I personally had the honour and pleasure of speaking with Chantale at that time, and was greatly humbled and deeply touched by her infectious charm, her calm thoughtfuness on her health challenges, and her endearing love of family.
I speak for that special student cohort from the late 1960s in expressing our love and support for Gerald and his family, and we look forward to surrounding him with that love in Ottawa.
