Obituary of Duncan Alfred Sutherland
The world has lost a kind and gentle man. Duncan Sutherland passed away peacefully in his 87 th year on September 25 th , 2025. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jane (Prior Sibley) Sutherland, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage. He is remembered as a kind father and the best dad by his daughters, Monique Sutherland (Erik Turnhout) and Cynthia Stuart. He holds a special place in the hearts of Jane’s daughter Michelle and son-in-law Ken Fach. Duncan was proud of his grandchildren Brittney Murray (Lorne), Madison Fach (Liam McCormack) and Chiadra Stuart as well as his great grandchildren, Chase and Nash Murray. He is also remembered by Jane’s son Michael Sibley (Nicole). Duncan is survived by his sisters Mary Ann Brenholen and Lois Pearce (Garry) as well as his sister-in-law Eileen Sutherland. Predeceased by brothers George and David and brother-in-law Lionel.
Duncan was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where his journey began. He joined the Air Force, sparking a lifelong passion for flying and aircraft. This early experience set the stage for a distinguished career in aviation.
After his time in the Air Force, Duncan relocated to Guelph, Ontario, where he devoted himself to raising his family. His commitment to both his professional and personal life was evident in everything he did. Duncan served with pride and dedication as a Captain for Air Canada for over 30 years. His career allowed him to travel to destinations around the world.
When not flying, Duncan cherished spending time with family and friends. He also gave back to his community by volunteering at local schools, sharing his talents with younger generations. In addition, Duncan was a proud and dutiful member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 234, honouring his commitment to service beyond his professional life.
Duncan will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who cherished his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support. His gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion that will be remembered for years to come.
The family would like to recognize and thank St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph for the care and comfort Duncan received. Cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held. Memorial donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph.
